18 days until move....to an apartment

Had a garage sale yesterday. Made $15. My friends put up the signs and I think that the signs weren't entirely clear about the location of the sale. So I am going to do another one next weekend with another friend - and / or I am going to post the items that have value on Craigslist.

I sort of hit a wall in terms of packing/sorting. I have found the boxes that I'm not ready for... GLASSWARE. I have fond memories of grandma's glassware, but do I really need all of it? No. How do I choose what to keep and what to let go of?

Wait...What did I say to my husband yesterday? That I would set those boxes in a special section of storage and go through them AFTER the move when I have more time/sanity to deal with it. ha!

hi there, t'is I, miss buttinsky with all of her opinions and advice!! lmao, well I just thought I'd tell you what I did to market my sale (not that you asked, but when has that ever stopped me?) smile...

so, first - i put it on internett mecca, otherwise known as craigslist.org. Anything I ever post there is always wildly successful. They have a special section in classifieds for Garage Sales, and it is free to post.

second, I asked around about what "little" newspaper people might be looking for yard sales in. There is a whole kind of cultic-following of sales shoppers, people who shop them regularly and then resell on ebay or such. so you want to reach them, those that aren't internet savvy. the add cost me 12 bucks for a small, local paper.

lastly, we (daughter and I) bought 2x3 neon poster board at Walgreen's and big thick black sharpies and made signs with only the words SALE and address and Arrows. We went to the 3 closest major intersections coming from both directions towards my house and put them up every few blocks.

My "customers" came via all 3 methods, I know because I asked them! I'm sure my turnout would have been far smaller if I had only put up signs.

good luck, and yes I'd say try it again ... with at least the addition of the craigslist.org listing.

Hey, there!

My two favorite women in the move mode. Where were you all those years that I was carting stuff around from apartment to apartment and storage unit to storage unit! While I love to go to the flea market and buy other people's crap, I must have an aversion to selling my own. I can give it away, I can take it to Goodwill, I can pay to take it to the dump, but I just can't seem to get into a seller's mode. It has to be a manufacturing flaw.

It was with that background that LF and I shipped "everything" to Le Blanc. I figured that I could sort and cull in my own little house, where eviction was less likely to be imminent, as we settle in next year. Then I could go to the weekly market, the "brocantes," and also investigate eBay France. You two would never believe the vast array of stuff we sent that should, of course, have been given away! I recently asked an acquaintance who is a buyer and seller if we could do a "Vulcan Mind Meld" and he could teach me how to be a saleswoman! Duh...

Amitiés and happy sales to you...

We can't have a garage sale where we live. I wish we could The townhouses forbid it. So, we are doing Ebay and Freecycle. But, in our garage sale before we moved to Chicago I did about $2000. Now, keep in mind we sold furniture and tools.

My one garage sale tip is merchandising. I made the stuff look pretty. I would make little displays. I would tie crayons together in little bundles with ribbons. Truth be told we sold some stuff for more than we paid for it. And, I can tell you that that felt good.;-)

Continued good luck with your packing and selling!
